The easiest way to find your JHED LID is to search for yourself in the
JHED directory from any campus computer. Due to security and privacy
concerns, there are restrictions on information (such as the Login ID) if
you attempt to search from off-campus.
1. Go to http://jhed.johnshopkins.edu/ (this link will open a new
window).
2. At the top of the screen will be "Search for a person:". Enter your
Last Name in the text field that says "Last Name, First Name" and click on
the "Go>>" button.
Note: if you have a common Last Name, try to provide "Last Name, First
Name".
e.g., Search for a Person: Hopkins, Johns
3. Much like a search engine, a list of results will appear, listing
all the people with your last name. Once you find your name in the Search
Results screen, click on your name to view detailed information about
yourself.
4. On your particular page, look for the field in big, bold letters
titled "Login Id:". The ID appearing next to this field is your LID.
If you cannot find your name, or see "LID is
suppressed" (when searching from off-campus), please contact one of the following:
- Faculty and staff can obtain their JHED Login ID’s from a manager/supervisor
- Students can obtain their JHED Login ID’s from the Registrar’s office
If you have questions about JHED, please contact the IT@Johns Hopkins
Help Desk at 410-516-HELP (during regular business hours).
Note: Helpdesk employees are not permitted to provide students, staff or faculty with their JHED ID’s. If you are unable to locate your JHED ID, you will need to contact one of the authorities listed above.
How do I set my JHED Password for
the First Time?
1. Go to http://jhed.johnshopkins.edu/ (this link will open a new
window).
2. At the top of the screen, click on the tab titled "Login".
3. When the Login screen comes up, scroll down to the section titled
"First Time Login/Reset my password:". Enter your JHED LID in the
appropriate field.
4. Click on the "Submit Login Request Now!" button to continue.
5. Now you must identify yourself to the JHED system to confirm that
the JHED LID you are using is in fact the proper one. The next screen that
comes up will prompt you for both your Social Security Number (SSN) and
Date of Birth (DOB). Enter your information in the appropriate fields.
Note: APL Staff will be prompted for their APL Employee Number, not SSN
or Date of Birth.
6. Click on the "Submit Login Request Now!" button to continue.
7. Now you must enter a Secret Question/Secret Answer combination. The
secret answer you enter will allow the JHED system to verify your identity
if you ever lose or forget your password and find yourself unable to log
into JHED.
8. Finally, pick a password that is between 6 and 8 characters long,
with at least one digit (0-9). Enter this password in the "New Password"
and "Verify New Password" fields. You need to enter your New Password
twice to verify you typed it correctly.
9. Click on the "Change My Password Now!" button.
10. Congratulations! You are now logged into the JHED system. In the
future, to log back into JHED, all you have to do is enter your JHED LID
and password.
11. First-Time users may be required by their Schools to take the "JHU
Policies Quiz".
All students (full-time and part-time) in the Schools of
Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and Peabody, will be prompted to take an
online test demonstrating knowledge of Hopkins' student computing
policies. You may review these student computing policies online at the
Student Computing
Policy Guide web site before you take the online test.
Warning: do NOT share your JHED Password with
anyone else. Someone who knows your JHED LID and Password can have access
to resources at JHU without your permission or knowledge.

does NOT affect your home computer.

has been successfully changed". Click on the "Ok" button to continue.
Warning: Do NOT share your JHED Password with
anyone else. Someone who knows your JHED LID and Password can have access
to resources at JHU without your permission or knowledge.
How is the LID created?
The LID is an 8 character id that consists of first initial, lastname (up to 6 characters) and a number on the
end to maintain uniqueness. For example, the LID for Johns Hopkins would be jhopkin1, with the second Johns Hopkins
being jhopkin2, etc.
In order to generate the LID, we generate the id and check for uniqueness against an "all
accounts" table for Hopkins, consisting of account ids for the major host systems as well as e-mail ids.
Why do I need yet another login id to use JHED?
To perform a search using JHED you do not need to login, unless you are off campus and want to get an intranet view of the
directory. Even then, you can search, however, the results will be very restricted.
Each person found in JHED has been
assigned a unique login id for several reasons;
